Help Random reboots starting

rushmore

Extreme Android User
I have had the Razr since Friday and used it pretty darn heavy at various times. Today for the first time, I have had two random reboots. Both times were with streaming media and when the HDMI was connected. I have not used HDMI on the Razr, but have had zero problems with the Droid 3 and had since July. I also noticed the Razr got hot, so wonder if the combo of hdmi out, 4G and Flash are too much.

Unplugged the HDMI to see if that is the problem. Either case, one more reboot, I will return the Razr and test the Rezound earlier than expected. Might as well, since will have to start from scratch again anyway. Good chance to test it :)

added:

I thought Zumocast caused the reboot, but was not using it the second time. Both times, the screen locked up, few seconds later the Moto icon appeared and then reboot city.

Unfortunately, random reboots will happen on any device. This is just how it goes. Several different things can cause this, however... If the problem becomes unbearable then you should think about getting a replacement.

Did you alter the stock phone in any way, like freezing apps?

I've had crashes, especially in Motocast, but I'm 99% sure it's because I froze bloat.

Agreed on the random reboots reality but two within one hour seems a trend to me ;)

I am testing with and witout HDMI to see if can replicate. I do know that the Razr has not become hot except when using HDMI and streaming with 4G. I have had the Droid 3 since July and have had zero issues with HDMI and two reboots (that I am aware of while actually using the D3)- one self inflicted, due to an app that was not meant for the D3 that I side loaded.

The D3 is no saint though. Camera is slooow and the device can get hot. Razr so far has been a much better device, compared to an already good Droid 3.

I have not seen many random reboots posts, but I may possibly have found the "perfect" combo to cause them. Testing now and will get back later :)

I have not rooted it and only added Launcher Pro. Have not even added apps since the mega install fest on Friday. The only thing unique I did was use hdmi and stream video via 4G. One time with Flash and once with Motocast. Both times the device froze for a few secs and rebooted.

I am now testing streaming vid without HDMI, but the device is still getting hot. I may have jinxed the Razr after talking how it does not get hot. Figures.

Added:

Plus I was charging the Razr while using HDMI and streaming video. Hot combo.

Update:

Confirmed. HDMI + 4G + streaming video + charging = kiss of reboot death. It does on my Razr.

I will test this out on my Razr tonight to see if I can replicate.

That combo is the only way I can get it to happen so far. Does not matter if Motocast or Flash in browser.

Can you test this with wifi instead of 4g? and with Bluetooth on. Thats how i will be running mine when i get it and i dont want to have to deal with reboots on netflix. I dont have 4g at my place and absolutely love my Bluetooth turtle beach headphones. Also maybe turn everything on as a try? Gps, bluetooth, wifi, 4g, screen max brightess charging hdmi. I really dont wana deal with this problem when i get mine.

Wifi and bluetooth on does not appear to be an issue, since have tried different combos & wifi. Unless an odd coincidence, each time happened, as noted above, but not every time I tried. Seems heat is not the issue, since 111 to 112 degrees should be manageable. Heck, the Rezound got 10 degrees hotter than that and did not reboot (at least not when I tested). Some report reboots and boot-loops though, but have used the Rezound a LOT more than me.

I can not seem to peg the issue to anything except HDMI and streaming video, since does not happen surfing web or playing games. Just streaming video, but could be an odd coincidence.

I posted a temp scale of the Razr and the device seems to behave well (cooler than my D3, at least). Flash seems to be the thing that gets the device the warmest. I would hate to think how hot with Flash 10- yikes.

Mine actually rebooted this morning when I snoozed the alarm... hasn't happened before... but it was odd that I snoozed, then shortly after I heard "DROOOID!"

Not that much of a problem...

The "Drooid" sound makes it more annoying, so I changed the alarm sound and lowered the volume ;)

The streaming video link was a false path. I have now had just as many device freezes followed by a hard reboot simply by using HDMI to out put for web surfing and random apps.

HDMI (at least on my Razr) is aa apparent problem and has been since second day owning it. The only "random" reboots I have had have ALL been with HDMI plugged in. Six so far.

I guess since HDMI appears the constant, it is not a complete random event.

Are you bailing on the RAZR already Rush? I've had no reboots or issues since getting the phone on friday (I am rooted and have re-installed many of my apps/data via TB). Only issue I've had is once today i woke it up with the power button and instead of my widget locker lock screen it was just a bunch of different colors in vertical lines. I hit the power button to turn the screen back off and upon my next hit of the power button the display was fine. Not sure what caused the issue. Anyway, if you do go over to the rezound, I'll be interested to see your thoughts on the differences between the two phones.

Not bailing on the Razr, but maybe this particular one. I like the Razr enough to not even bother with the extended Rezound test.

Faster emulator performance, card location, easy root, better IMO overall display (better contrast, less glare, better angles, less picky with apps, easier to see outside) and faster overall performance make it a win for me.

Would also like to confirm, I also get random reboots when using the hdmi output on the RAZR. It happens when either browsing the Web or when playing any sort of media, streaming and non streaming.

Happened again to me three out if three times including today. Each time it happened was during browsing. Does not matter if Flash or basic browsing.

Longest went so far with no freeze and reboot was one hour.

Never happens with Droid 3 and have literally gone all day using it.
