Help Random Reboots

Here's my situation. I just bought it yesterday. Works great at home, sucks at work. At work it reboots a bunch while using it, at home it doesn't at all. I have crappy signal at work and great signal at home. Think its related? How to find out why it reboots?

It shouldn't be doing that. It seems as though at least some of the new Optimus Elites are defective. There have been several posters on this board who have reported problems with random freezing, random reboots, and dismal battery life.

Simple solution: Return your phone to the store for an exchange, as your phone appears to be defective, right out of the box. My first Optimus Elite kept freezing on me, requiring a battery pull. I exchanged it for a new one, and I have had nothing but a good experience with my second OE. Other posters have reported a similar experience. Luck of the draw with the new VM OEs, I guess...

I believe my problems are pretty much gone now. The crashes only happened on the first day, and I've had 2 solid days without problems now except for signal and bouncing between towers at home but I called and there's a problem in my area.

I stopped using the stock charger, its a piece of crap, its only 5v .85A, probably just enough to run the phone and charge just a little bit at the same time. I noticed it charges a lot faster with my 1A charger. Maybe that weak charger was causing my problems too because the crashes were when it was plugged into it.

Hey so my wife just got the LG optimus elite and is having lots of random reboots as well. We took it back and got a new one but it's still having issues with lots of random reboots any fixes?

When the phone randomly restarts itself, it is a pretty good signal that the kernel has crashed. Think of it like the blue screen from windows.

It sounds like your wife installed a program which tells the kernel to do something and the kernel handles it poorly and crashes. You can verify this by pulling the file "/data/dontpanic/last_kmsg". Usually it looks like a long, boring log. When the kernel crashes, there will be a crash dump at the end of the log that says just where it crashed. If this is the case, replacing the phone with another Elite won't fix it as long as she keeps installing that same app.

Our options for fixing situations like this are pretty poor:
1) Call LG, complain, have them give you a different model of phone.
2) Call LG, complain, provide those crash dumps and wait months for them to push an update to the Elite.
3) Find the app that is causing the kernel to crash and uninstall it and just deal with it.
4) Fix the bug yourself on your own time and void your warranty :( .

Basically #3 is the fastest one that doesn't involve having to get another phone. If your wife is one of those people that just likes getting new stuff, go with #1 and let her enjoy getting a new phone.

Sorry forgot to follow up here. Random reboots are common with this phone on both firmwares if you connect to certain wifi access points. High end Cisco and dd-wrt for sure at certain chips/versions for sure. Probably various others.

I use mine with a Linksys E3000 (Cisco, it's almost the same as the WRT610N v2.0) running Tomato USB firmware at home. It will only connect to the 2.4 GHz signal, but I don't think I've ever experienced a random reboot. I don't doubt others have experienced problems.

it depends on a number of factors. like giantpune said its most likely kernel issues in your case. my elite has dismal battery life that i think is related to defective radio or poor bandwidth capacity in my area. my elite cant seem to stay in communication with local towers for some reason. data service constantly dtops out and fails. i think that is draining the battery at a high rate. brcause the phone is constantly trying to obtain and keep signal. i think ill be on the one v before the middle of next week. or with straight talk. one of the two will occur. ive had three elites counting two replacements and all were having issues. i will not accept another elite replacement from vm. its either a refund or im gone as a customer.
