[RANT] the new Moto X

Am I the only one who cringed when discovering that the successor to the Moto X would also be called Moto X? Apple did this with the iPad, Google did it with the Nexus 7, and now Motorola has done it with the Moto X. It's not so much that it's a bad idea to keep a product name over multiple generations of a product (car manufacturers do this regularly), it's the lack of distinction for the first generation that bothers me. Anything related to the first generation Moto X - reviews, blog posts, forum posts, 3rd party accessories, Motorola accessories - provide no mention of which model year they apply to, causing needless confusion when reading, or purchasing accessories; all because Motorola lacked the forethought to uniquely identify the product. I understand that each device has a unique model number (except for the Developer Edition and the "T-Mobile" edition), but that's little or no help when you're reading reviews, posts, or accessory descriptions that simply refer to "Moto X".

I ran into this with the Droid (now referred to as the "OG Droid") - good luck searching for something related to the Droid without being inundated with things related to all of the models in the Droid family.

You're right that car manufacturers figured this out. The 2014 Motorola X vs the 2013 Motorola X, the 2014 HTC One instead of that stupid M8 stuff. Everybody will be fine if they do this.

Samsung did it with the Galaxy Note 10.1, for the 2014 version they just added a "(2014)" to the name.

I prefer this method as well. Why must you change the name of a device? Unless the previous version was plagued with issues. The OG Moto X made a good name for itself. Why not continue that buzz?

Keeping Moto X in the name is fine, but will get confusing if it is simply "moto x" every year. A yearly release cycle is becoming standard for phones so adding a model year like doogald mentions would be nice. Verizon's Droid's are some of the worst. Without already knowing, how many people would guess that the Droid Maxx is newer than the Droid Razr Maxx?

The iphone and Galaxy S number schemes at least distinguish models sequentially, though I bet they'll change it up to year number or some other scheme before they get to 10.

For the purpose of articles, either 2nd Gen Moto X or MY (model year) will do, just like cars.

I agree. My main issue is that references to the original Moto X over the past year make no distinction because there's been only one Moto X until now. The result is that anyone searching for info on the original Moto X will invariably be inundated with results pertaining to subsequent model years, with no useful way to narrow their search criteria. Knowing that there's a 2014 model, you could always search for "moto x" -2014, but that would exclude any results that contain 2014, even in the publication date, and those excluded results could also contain references to the original Moto X.

I could care less about the name... the fact that I can order a Gen 1 with 64 gig and only get 32 gig on a Gen 2 is beyond nuts.

Does anyone know when Moto will get their heads out of their.... ??? If you're not going to have a SD card slot... at least give us some decent internal memory. I hear the new i-phones will have a 128 gig option.
