I have a 25' telescopic flag pole that has three interlocking sections. Today I looked out front and old glory was waving about seven feet off the ground. The bottom two interlocking connections are broken. To lock a section together you pull the first section out of the other two sections. When it reaches full extension, you give it a quarter twist and then let it drop into the locking position that is about an inch lower.
You repeat with each section. My theory of the breakage was user error. I think I failed to get top section locked after raising the flag back to full staff and it was sitting in a on the collar but hadn't fallen into the locking position. The wind shook the flag pole and instead of falling into the locking position, the entire section dropped onto the lower connection which shattered and dropped the two sections onto the last connection and shattered it. It is a Titan brand flag pole and the parts are available for dummies that fail to get a section locked. It was a hundred and nineteen dollar mistake.

Mine is a stack on type, (4 sections), each section has a female connection made into the bottom and a male connection at the top and they just slip into each other. I was wary of this design at first but it has served me well.

Speaking of which...

Every year I send in this letter to the editor of our local paper. He's been very good about publishing it, and I merely update it with the correct date each year:

Now that Memorial Day is behind us and summer lay ahead, many people start thinking about their Independence Day festivities: buying fireworks, planning cookouts, etc. Between now and then, however, is a holiday that, tragically, is all too often overlooked.

American Legion’s annual Flag Retirement Ceremony is currently scheduled for Saturday, June 13th at 5 PM, at the Coffee County Veterans Building: 130 Shelton Road in Manchester. All members of the public, especially school age children, are encouraged to attend to learn more about our American Flag; and why old flags are ceremonially destroyed, with dignity and honor, according to prescribed ritual.

This ceremony is held on or near June 14th, which is Flag Day – a holiday set aside for Americans to celebrate our national colors, the Stars & Stripes in defense of which over a million men and women have sacrificed their lives.

This is a great time to replace any worn, faded, frayed or otherwise unserviceable flag with a new one. In addition to your own, look around you for any neighbors who may be sick or elderly: and offer to replace theirs as well.

The American Flag, by law, is never to be thrown away in the trash! NEVER! Your Coffee County Veterans Association has four outdoor receptacles around Manchester, into which old flags may be deposited year-round. Your local veterans’ organizations, led by the American Legion, store the flags for annual retirement. We hope you and your family will join us for this enlightening event.
