(Rant) Why can't they make good SMALL phones???

Its like this:

Netflix on a 3.5"-3.7" screen or 4" or 4.3"-4.5" screen...

Playing games

Web browsing

Virtual keyboard

IMO are all better on a bigger screen. And I think as more features like Netflix and games get more detailed bigger screens will be better, wanted.

For smartphones.....one of the things that made me get the Omnia 1 and then the Droid 1 was the bigger screens. Even for regular cellphones, one reason I chose the Motorola E815 was the screen size.

To me it just seems better to have a bigger screen. But for Android phones the jump from 3.7" to 4" shouldnt be that big.

I cannot believe that we can't have a 4G radio with a dual-core processor in a 4" or 3.7" display Android device.

I suspect at some point we may. But there is more hardware crammed into about the same space. Smaller components generally cost more. And in the phone market, generally, its hard to justify upping the price of a phone with a smaller screen then the next guy. Additionally, 4G is a battery hog. So unless people are content with even less uptime, either the space reserved for battery will need to get bigger or we will need to develop new batteries with higher energy density (and even if we did, its likely to cost more).

Don't get me wrong, I'm not unsympathetic. My GF's Dinc recently got stolen. Tracking software came up empty. I couldn't justify paying any money for a phone that wasn't more current on specs. Unfortunately, all the 4G phones are rather large so we opted on getting her a Bionic as well since it will integrate well with the accessories I had already bought for mine. She would still much prefer a smaller phone, but there weren't any decent options without remaining on 3G.

I just got this phone yesterday, and haven't gotten used to it yet, which is to be expected. Fine. I like the speed, features etc... But in all honesty, I wonder just what got into cell phone makers' heads regarding phone size. I mean, sure, some people have bigger hands, thus phones like this are perfect for them.... And others just CANT live without being able to watch hi-def programming on their phone... But what about people with smaller hands, or those who simply like smaller phones? Who are only into occasional video usage? Are we banished to either having a well-powered (speed wise) phone that's bulky and awkward in our hands or smaller, sluggish and underpowered phones? Kind of unfair.

Processors/ram are small enough nowadays that you don't NEED the space of a larger, thicker phone to keep them cool (for the most part)... There's no excuse for this. I hope in a couple of years, when I'm due for a new phone, cell makers will have the brains to give us people who are looking for a speedy but smaller form factored phone the ability to have what we want and can't get today.

I'm going to give this phone a few days to see if I can get used to it.... I just wish I didn't HAVE to "get used to it..." It's all or nothing with smartphones these days: Huge and speedy, or small and uber sluggish. Very disappointing.

After using it for a week or so, go back to your old phone (I have HTC Incredible and the original Droid - or IPHONE if you have that). the screens look positively PUNY! i was shocked

Although I've never been a bluetooth headset kind of gal, I could see having only a tablet with radio and a headset in the future. Not for everyone, mind you, but as an option. It would have to have a darn good voice command interface and be pretty much totally hands free. Leave the tablet in your bag.

Having said that, it REALLY bugs me when people are walking down the street "talking to themselves".
