Razr HD developer edition vs Verizon edition

I was hoping to get a Razr HD Maxx Developer Edition, but it's taking too long so I'll probably just buy the HD Maxx today.

Does anyone know if you can follow the steps for unlocking the bootloader for Motorola's Razr HD Developer edition when you have the Verizon edition? That is, if you buy the phone on-contract from Verizon, can you still unlock the bootloader?

I'm hoping that the same idea would apply to the HD Maxx and that maybe I can still unlock the bootloader at some point in the future...

I doubt it, because what would be the use in having a developer edition? You can root it, but that isn't the same as unlocking the bootloader.

I think the Developer edition is a consequence of Verizon refusing to sell unlocked phones and Motorola catering to the developer community. Motorola is the one that makes the phone so they can get around it by selling the Developer edition direct to consumers.

The Developer edition should have the exact same hardware as the editions sold by Verizon. I would be very surprised if Motorola had to order a separate lot for developer editions - it wouldn't be cost-effective. The only differences should be in the software, which means that Verizon-bought phones should be unlockable.

I'm only speculating of course...

I'm pretty sure the developer edition version is available right now on motorola's website. It's the exact same phone as the regular HD except with an unlocked bootloader and no warranty. I doubt Verizon will ever sell them though so the Motorola website is probably the only place to get it.
