Razr Maxx's global capabilities

The new ICS update is suppose to unleash our phone's GSM roaming capabilities. With that said, will I be able to use the maxx overseas with a local sim card instead of Verizon's pricey international plans? If so, where will the sim card go? Do we put it in place of our 4g sim slot?

CNET published an article about global roaming with the SGS3. Hopefully, this will apply to all of Verizon's GSM-activated phones (RAZR, Rezound,Galaxy SIII).

I've now heard back from Verizon, which told me:

"The Verizon model of the Galaxy S III will be global ready for GSM roaming after a software update that will be pushed sometime after launch. After the phone gets the software update to be global ready, customers don't need to call customer service to have it unlocked if they wish to use a local SIM while traveling. They can also call Verizon to have an international data plan added if they'd like."

That's nice to hear, that you won't have to call in to unlock the phone for use abroad. I'm not sure if that means, however, if a US-based SIM for AT&T or T-Mobile will work. Checking again!

Yes, you would simply insert a SIM card into your phone's SIM slot. There are a few varieties of SIM formats nowadays, so you have to make sure you get the right size.

I believe you can also get a larger Sim card cut down to size.

Thanks whalebus. I hope it will be the same for the maxx. I'll be traveling oversea near the end of July and it would be nice to be able to use a local sim card on the phone.

It will be great if I can simply pop a local sim in my phone and have service. That was a great feature of my old ATT phone. Going to Japan next month so I hope this works.
