Razr to Razr Maxx conversion...anyone do it?

Has anyone done this for their Razr:

Motorola Droid Razr Battery Upgrade Kit To Droid RAZR MAXX Extended Battery

Is this something that I can realistically do myself? The site instructions claim that I should purchase some additional tools/parts for DIY. Or, is it best to simply send them my phone and have them do it? What's the quality like when it's completed?

Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

My understanding is the process is pretty straightforward, but the connector ribbon you're working with is pretty delicate. As far as the work involved, unless you are terrible with DIY stuff that shouldn't be a reason not to do it yourself. Especially with the down time of having to send it off.

I have to say that I'm deeply bother that the website mentions getting "3-Times the Battery Life". You're going from a 1750mAh standard battery to a 3300mAh maxx battery. That's less than twice the capacity. Look at the battery life figures, and they are also less than twice the original.

Yeah, I saw that as simple marketing BS. I'm just interested in getting through a day without having to scramble for a charger which this should do.

I'm not interested in those separate power packs or additional add on batteries...I want something more permanent, thus this option.

Wondering if I can DIY without any special tools?

You'll need them (at the very least you will need the Torx driver, not sure if you could fake out the pry tool). Buy them elsewhere, their price is a complete rip off for the tools. Also not sure if you need the chasis or not (I think it's fairly easy to modify the old one, but not 100% sure on that).

I did the conversion
I took about 1/2 hr. Fairly easy
Took three months to get my kit though. I would do it again in a minute, made a good phone great

The way I converted my RAZR into a RAZR MAXX took about a week. I called and complained about my battery. They sent me a new(used) RAZR. That one too died very fast. When I called the guy told me he would put me into a new(used) MAXX. The next day when the phone never came I call VW. They said there was no record of it. The rep lied to me to get me off the phone. Jerk! Anywhoo. I talked with someone who said "Sorry, nothing I could do." I called back the next day. Talked with someone else who said the same. Come Thursday, I talked with a very nice lady who was upset that I was lied to. We talked about an hour about the details. She took my number down and said she call me back asap. She called me the next day and said sorry, they wouldn't give me a new MAXX. I said, I don't need a "New" one and that I'd take a refurb'd one. She said "Oh, ok, let me see what I can do. I'll call you back." She called back in an hour with approval for my MAXX and gave me a confirmation number as well. I got it in the mail on Monday. WOO!

I have not however, tried converting it the way you asked about lol. I would imagine it isn't difficult. Although it would void the warranty.

The kit was easy to assemble. I had it done in about a half hour. I discovered the t3 torq screws could be removed with a t4 driver. Build quality is excellent. One fyi note, remove your micro sd card prior to taking the phone apart.... Of note, the phone now says it is a Razr Maxx. I had phone on battery for 17hours last night and the battery was down to 50%. I couldnt be happier.

That is awesome. What would be nice is for someone to make a bigger batter conversion. The MAXX still has room for bigger. If they made the back plate completely flush with where the camera is, you could probably fit a 5000 mah battery in there. And it still wouldn't be big. That would be nice.

I just did the conversion on mine, like i3enny it took me about 1/2 hour to do. The phone booted right up and everything is working. At this point I don't know what battery life is like, but of course I expect it to be almost double what it was.
