Root Re-root?

leszer

Lurker
Is it dangerous or fairly feasible to re-root my phone? I rooted it using the LeeDroid walkthrough a couple months ago and I've been trying to live with com.droid.phone errors and random app drops since and I'm ready to try something different.

So should I re-do my current LeeDroid root (not sure how I'd start that, recover to rom?) or go with the Ace hack? Can I even go to the ace hack now?

Just looking for some direction.

Thanks.

Are you not currently rooted? If your phone is running a leedroid rom right now then you should still be rooted. If somehow you lost root then I think you will not have to much trouble rooting again with ace. You may have to factory reset first. If your phone is still granting superuser requests for things like rom manager then you are still rooted and can flash a different rom.

No, I'm rooted but I get errors at least 5 times a day and that's being conservative. So can I flash to the ace hack? I just don't want to compound my problems. I'd rather start from square one if it's advisable, if it doesn't matter then I'll just flash to something different. I just hate the errors.

Most likely the errors you are getting would be resolved by just flashing a fresh ROM. Shouldn't need to re-root. Wipe everything through recovery, flash the ROM, and rebuild the system from scratch. I would refrain from restoring things from Ti Backup to lessen the chance of reintroducing whatever it is that's causing the errors.

If you're set on starting from square one, you need to use AAHK to restore S-On and flash the stock ROM. Then you need to run the kit again to root. Then you can flash a different ROM if you choose, or just run the rooted stock ROM. If you try to run the kit while the phone is still S-Off, you'll run into problems.

It sounds like problem you are having is not with the method of rooting but rather the rom that u are using. Trying to reroot would definitely complicate things. One thing you may try is going into rom manager and there is an option in there to fix permissions. If you don't have rom manager it's free in the market...get it. It will also allow you to download a different rom. I very highly recommend cyanogen mod 7.1. It is very stable and reliable. You don't need to reroot your phone. Before you do anything though research a little bit. You can do things to your phone pretty easily that will seem like you have effed it up but more than likely you didn't. Try fixing permissions before you do anything and see if that doesn't help.

I do second the notion that this could be an app that is causing the problem.

I've done the permission fix, I'll see how it works over the next day. If all is well I'll give Cyanogen a try. You know I brought this same issue up like 3 months ago and no one mentioned doing this.

Honestly it may or may not work. The sure fire way to fix the problem is going to be flashing a fresh rom. I will be curious to see if the permissions fix does help though.

Okay, so I waited until about 9 this morning after running the permission fix then flashed cm7 after reading about it last night.

So far though the video hasn't come back so I'm pretty sure I pressed my luck too far. lol

If I bricked it I hope the Galaxy nexus comes out soon.

Video? as in like it will not play a video in your gallery or what? this should be a pretty easy fix. there are lots of different video players that you can get on the market. I personally like MX video player. Elaborate a little :) Hope that we were able to help ya get your phone working properly otherwise. Now fixing permissions will help if you are having force close problems with apps and things like that. it wasn't specifically necessary to do before flashing a new rom. It won't/didn't hurt anything either. the advise in one of the earlier posts not using titanium backup to restore your apps was good. you will be better off downloading the apps you want directly from the market and only the ones you need. it's generally a good idea to not have a bunch of apps on your phone that you aren't using. Some apps will cause problems on your phone and gunk up the whole thing. I downloaded an n64 emulator one time that totally effed up my phone all around. Once you have your phone the way you want it and it does not have any errors, make a backup in rom manager. Name it something that you will remember. that way if you do run into problems in the future you will have a good backup that will restore your phone back exactly as it is now. enjoy cm7 ;)...and you didnt brick your phone. If you did it would just be stuck on the black screen of doom and it would just not do anything at all hence your phone would be a brick.

open a cmd window, and place phone in fastboot. relock with fastboot oem lock

this may result in a security warning that locks you into bootloader. to get out,you can re-unlock,or successfully run an ruu.

with the bootloader relocked, run this .exe and follow the on screen directions: Shipped ROMs

this will return your phone to 100% stock.

your roms are not working, more than likely becasue you have not successfully installed a boot image.htcdev unlock has limitations, and will not let recovery install the boot image(kernel) so it has to be done manually via fastboot.

oh thanyou sir u r a life saver.
sir can u please help me with installing custom roms.Whenever i try this it hangs on logo screen

It sounds like you didn't flash the boot.img after flashing the ROM zip. You need to extract the boot.img from the ROM zip and flash that via fastboot.

fastboot flash boot boot.img

open the bootloader
recovery
4ext recovery control opened
wipe data/factory reset
wipe dalwik+cache
wipe cache
install from sd card .zip file
trickdroid.zip
reboot
This what i did .
anything else i ve to do just tell me in simple language.

yup- you need to install your boot image. these directions are for the rezound, but they will work for you. just make sure to use an inspire compatible recovery image :)
