Read mail not syncing

I am a new member of the forum - I just bought my first smart phone last week. I got the HTC Rhyme, which I really like so far. However, the HTC mail widget does not recognize when I open an email on my laptop. It still shows as unread in the widget. I don't have this issue when I use the Gmail widget, but the Gmail widget doesn't integrate with the other features on my phone. I would prefer to use the mail widget, if I could get it to sync correctly. Any ideas?
