Reading comics from my PC

Is there a way to do this. I have lots of comics (.cbr) on my computer (Windows 7 64-bit). I've used ES File Explorer and Astro file Manager to connect to my computer with no issues but when I tap on a comic it does not open and says it does not know what the file is. I tried setting the file type in Astro but it just says it can't remotely open files. How useless is that? I have a comic reader installed. The whole point of reading them off my network is so I don't have to constantly copy files to my android to read the comics. Any advise? Thanks.

I'm testing on my phone because I already have it. If I can get things to work the way I want I'll be purchasing a tablet.

Comicrack is what you want. It is the Shiznit. It's got a free app you install on your computer that is not only a reader, but lets you sort all your comics into reading lists. Then it's got an Android app that syncs with your phone/tablet. The free app has ads and syncs only via a wired connection. The paid app syncs wirelessly. You tell it which reading lists you want to sync and it syncs. You read on your phone and it syncs your place to the same place on your computer and vice versa. I love it.

I believe the OP doesn't want to go through the hassle of syncing. What he wants is to read comic files stored on his PC directly from his tablet. A Windows- or desktop Linux-based tablet can do this (via network shares). Unfortunately, I have yet to find a way to accomplish this on Android. My current work-around is to carry a bunch of 32GB microSD cards holding various manga series (usually grouped by genre or author). It's not enough to hold my entire manga collection but it does give me enough on hand so I don't run out of stuff to read.

Meh. To me it's not a hassle to sync. Especially wirelessly. I leave the database and app running in the background on my computer. I never know it's running. I just hit sync on my tablet and the comics show up. Once I'm done with a series or two I sit down at the computer, plan out what I want to read next and pick which lists I want to sync. You can initiate the sync from the device or the computer. I can't gush enough about this app.

Update:
Found a way to get this working on the Nook Color (running CM7/CM9 dual-boot from microSD). Haven't tried it on CM9 but on CM7, cifsmanager let me mount network shares and present them as local folders to apps. Just read a couple of manga titles on Perfect Viewer loaded directly from the file server and it appears to be pretty snappy. :)

I could not get cifmanager to connect to my PC at all (Win 7 64-bit). Are you connecting to a windows box or linux?

Using shares from various computers:

  • Windows XP 32-bit
  • Windows 7 32-bit
  • Windows 7 64-bit
  • unRAID (based on Slackware Linux)

A cifs module is required so you need to find one for your device (or install a ROM that has it). The ROM I use for my Nook Color (CM7 Mirage) has a cifs module. You'd also need to load the cifs module on boot but that's something you can set-up inside cifsmanager settings (root required).

My device is not rooted. Guess I'll have to learn all that first then. sigh... Why can't you just stream files out of the box?? Oh well.

No need to root. What you're looking for is ComittoN.
No need to root or sync. Love ComicRack but i stopped using it after discovering ComittoN.
Just access your collection directly and stream over WiFi. It's easy to use and setup.
With the default setting you get no lag as far as i can tell.
Try it and rate it if you like it.

Works perfect. Exactly want I was looking for. Thank you!

Could someone help me with the setup for this? I got the Comitton app. How do I share the comics on my PC in a way that I can get to with the app? Thanks.
