Reading external drive

I'm going to buy either Samsung Galaxy or Asus epad tablet both with USB access. Can I use my external PC hard drive (500GB) and access the movies, music etc? I think the movies are AVI and other. Do they need to be a special format or can I get an app similar to VLC for PC?
Thanks in advance.

I have a similar external drive. I plug it into my PC and just copy the movies I want to my Galaxy S II phone or my Galaxy tablet which I also connect via USB. The movies are a mix of WMV, API and MP4. Can't answer whether you can read the drive from a tablet but take the drive to the store and plug it into the tablets. That's what I did with SD cards etc.
Cheers.

This thread is about 1 year old...as long as the external hard drive is not formatted with NTFS filesystem. I have the SGT2 and tried it with my ext. HD (NTFS) and it wouldn't read it.
