Apps Reading /proc/<process-id>/fd

Lurker
I am having android 4.1.2. Normally,in linux distributions, we do ls -ltr on /proc/<process-id>/fd to find the files opened by a process. But in android, I am getting access denied message.I think root privilege is required and I haven't done rooting in my mobile. If that is the case ,how the anti virus in my mobile will find out the files opened by a process ? Whether privilege problem exists in 4.2 also ?
