Help Really anoying data problem for samsung i9000! Help!

I get free internet from orange then my phone refuses to let me use data!! When I bring down the menu bar at top and press data nothing happens. Only thing that works is to press the button then turn it off and on and then its on for some reason

Not sure you're understanding correctly.

The thing you're doing is just turning data (3G) on and off.

Once you've turned it on (usually shown by 3G symbol in bar at top of the screen) you then need to launch the browser.

If your on orange the icon is normally globe coloured grey/orange.
