hey all i have gotten sick of ubuntu after the switch to unity. i tried linux mint 12 as well and it is better, i just need a good os for my laptop that isn't too complicated

Recommendations based on what I use, give Mepis or openSUSE a try. (Despite Linus having a rant at openSUSE's security policies, I find it pretty good.)

I think Ubuntu with Gnome worked for me :)
do not know y it gave crashes for u though ...

I think then Fedora is gr8
even Mint is gaining popularity these days :)

isnt ubuntu, mint, unity, all the same thing?

No. Ubuntu is a distribution based on Debian with it's own Unity desktop environment. Mint is a distribution based on either Ubuntu or directly on Debian depending on which flavour you choose. Clem and the other Mint developers have chosen not to go down the Unity route, instead customising Gnome3 and developing their own desktop environment. Even that explanation is probably simplistic and incomplete...

From a personal perspective, I prefer Mint over any official Canonical/Ubuntu solution. Linux Mint Debian Edition would be the one I'd go for if I were to use it personally.

I'm running OpenSUSE on my laptop and my HTPC with Gnome 3. Have had small issues but the folks at OpenSUSE forums have been friendly and helpful.

Debian.

Or you could just install a new Desktop manager for ubuntu... I have been trying out LXDM on a VM lately.
lxdm or lx... hmm... okay. LX?? ;)
