Help Receiving a text question

Alright, this may come across as a silly question. But does the screen light up as default when receiving a text or do you need to download an app for this to happen?

I am asking because I currently have a Sony Xperia, and across the range the phone screen does not light up when receiving a text and I have had to time and again find apps to make the screen light up, and half don't seem to work. I usually only have my phone on silent, so its hard to know when I get a text. And I am considering jumping back to Samsung as it was a mistake to leave them

mine lights up & flashes message on screen. if you have on vibrate aswell it will help you
