Lurker
I just got my 1st Android phone (Samsung Galaxy S) a few days ago. I'm pretty tech savvy and very familiar with Apple's iOS but I'm a bit overwhelmed by Android. I was able to root my phone successfully, mainly to have access to more apps (my carrier's market only has free apps), to delete the ones I don't use and maybe to improve battery life. My phone has been working perfectly but for some reason I'm afraid it will stop working because I rooted it.

Here are my questions:

-What Things should I avoid after rooting?
-Can I still use Kies after rooting?
-Samsung Apps sent me a message regarding app updates, can I accept it and it will not ruin the phone?
-How can I store apps in my SD card, and is there a way to store unused apps in my computer, like you can do with the iPhone?

Sorry for the long post, thanks in advance.

The most important thing to avoid when rooted is deleting parts of the file system necessary for stable operation. Many apps are interdependent so a good rule of thumb is if you are unsure, leave it alone.

Yes, Kies still works with a rooted phone, however if you use Kies to perform a system update, you could loose root.

With root you can use Titanium to backup your apps.

-What Things should I avoid after rooting?
Don't play with the System folder unless you know what you are doing.

-Can I still use Kies after rooting?
Yes you can still use Kies as long as you did not install a custom rom.

-Samsung Apps sent me a message regarding app updates, can I accept it and it will not ruin the phone?
Yes you can update these apps it worn't do any damage to the phone, you can also ignore them.

-How can I store apps in my SD card, and is there a way to store unused apps in my computer, like you can do with the iPhone?
If you are on 2.2 and up, you can move apps to the SD card by going to Settings, Applications, Manage Applications, select the app and select Move to SD Card.

As for unused apps, you can back them up using Titanium Backup, to backup the apps and data and delete them from the phone and restore them when needed. Also if you go to market.android.com you can find all the apps you installed.
