Help Recording audio with an external mic

Hi,
I have a Sony Xperia Z5 and would like to connect an external mic to the phone to record audio when using the video camera (recording a live band). I know this can be done as there is a Sony external mic to buy, however I would rather not pay out for this if it can be done cheaper.
I have tried plugging the mic in to the headphone socket however it doesnt work.
Does anyone know what I need to get a mic working with the phone?

The microphone should have 3 (Most Android phones) 0r 4 black bands (Sony Xperia Phones) around it to work through the headphone jack. I'm not sure if the 3 band version would work with a Sony device because Sony can be very proprietary at times. Most tape recorder microphones usually only have 1 black band around them AFAIK.
