Recover deleted photos

Is there any way I can recover photos I deleted approximately a year ago?

I am not very tech savy and have read stuff about rooting the device?

If you have not written to the disk since the deletion you can however if you have then sorry they are gone

Just got a call from sister, her kids wiped her phone due to unlock attempts with Cerberus. She, I don't think, had done anything yet. I'm heading over. Is she screwed for her pictures? Ugh.

Edit. By some miracle she listened to me before and has backed up to G+. Phew.
