Recover lost file on Galaxy S8

This phone does not have a removable card or I would already know what to do.

I copied about eight files from my phone to my computer and then deleted the files on my phone but when I tried to access the files on the computer, only seven were there, one missing.

Are there any free or low-cost programs for doing this? Everything I have found so far are in the $80 and up range.

EDIT: The phone is running Android version 9 if that matters.

"free or low cost programs".......i have yet to find one. but i'm not one who would need these kind of services. from what i have seen here, most of the paid ones are scams so be very careful if you choose to go the paid route.

the s8 should have still have a removeable sd card slot. are you sure you do not have one?

I don't know where or how I "learned" this phone has no card slot but I sure appreciate your correction. I found it and will put it to use right away. Frankly, I do NOT need the extra space but recovering files from a card is far easier than from the phone's internal memory.

Maybe since I didn't need more space I just forgot about the card slot over time.

Try installing Samsung's Smart Switch. It's a multipurpose utility that includes a device backup and restore feature. Instead of using different apps and tools to backup different files and things in a random way, this allows you to make full backups each session. And just a side note, if you backup files to a microSD card, that does at least involve a backup, but if you lose the phone, you lose both the internal storage and the card. Use Smart Switch to make backups to an external source so you'll still be able to access all your data, or in this instance, that one missing file.

I've tried several file recovery softwares and non mount the phone's internal memory. If you have first-hand experience with one that will, please post a name.

Windows file recovery software would have worked on Android 2.x, where the phone's storage was mounted as USB mass storage (i.e. same as a flash drive - which also meant that the phone couldn't access it while you were copying files). Since 4.x its used Microsoft's Media Transfer Protocol for file transfer, which does not give the computer the same level of access to the storage device. It may look superficially the same on Windows, in that you can open it in Windows Explorer the way you would a flash drive or portable hard disk, but it isn't the same thing. I don't use Windows with my phones (I barely use Windows at all), but I've not heard of regular file recovery software working since this change was made (about 9-10 years ago).

The trouble with the apps that claim they can do it is that it's very hard to find testimonies of success from real users who are not connected with the apps.
