recover photos from LOST.DIR easiest way

This really saved me, thank you so much!!

(And now I know not to try and open my camera app while the phone is booting, oof...)

This saved me! I was able to recover some pictures, the rest of the 300 files didn't open in jpeg format. I tried mp4 and mp3, and they didn't open under those either, anything else it might be?

A linux OS reads the memory disk as if nothing is wrong. (All the files in the lost.dir have extensions)
Plug memory card in to linux machine and copy files from the lost.dir to another dir and you will have working pic and movies.

Recently I've been loosing a lot of pictures from my external sd card on S3 and they are moved to a folder called : LOST.DIR (it contained over 300 unknown files)
I googled for solution but all required recovery software and a pc etc...
by accident I found the easiest and most guaranteed recovery method.

1. install ES file explorer from play store
it's the best file manager on the market you can find the link below:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.estrongs.android.pop

2. Open ES file explorer go to extsdcard

3. Open LOST.DIR

4. Select all: you can do that by long pressing on any file then click select all.

5. click Rename in the bottom of the screen
you'll get: Batch Rename
Input a new name: choose any name e.g: Image
Start number: write 1 or 01
Rename extension name: write jpg
Click ok
(check the attached image)
and you'll get all your images back!
bt this method is not working..so u can choose another method...

Do I have to do it using the same phone they were wiped from?
Only because the connection port is broken and I don't believe the phone has the play store on...
Really need help on this one as its for a customer

Thank you so much! My partner and I are so thankful that you put this online. We were both at wits end and had just about given up. This is such an easy and quick solution to such a horrible problem. I'm so glad that we stumbled upon this. Moved to tears due to some precious pictures being recovered.

Thanks again!
From two very happy people.

Edit: This was carried out on a Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini

I tried this option and other options I found online, but none worked for me. Until I came across this one:
http://echo.com.ng/2013/howto-recover-files-lost-dir-folder-free/#axzz3alo9Xqfd
which directed me to this one:
http://mark0.net/soft-trid-e.html
where there is a little program which turned most of my files back to photos, videos, music etc. Only very few are still unreadable.
It did take me a couple of tries for it to do the job, but it did...
Joined this forum, just to let the ones who still have not been able to recover there files..

:-)

Hi how are you. I just wanted to know where do you have to go to check if your images and videos got restored? Do you just go to your gallery?

I almost wept when I did this...and as an added bonus, my phone was nice enough to sort my photos back into their date stamps instead of 1979!!! Thank you so much, I was 1/2 way there and you saved me.

I ve just made an account to thank you this is the first time i have a technicale problem and find fast and easy solution thank you very much

For recovering photos from lost dir. I think the best choice for you is Android Photo Recovery.
1. it is able to recover lots of kind of files.
2. Support for most devices.
3. Easy and safe for you to use.
