Root Recovery boot loop

El Presidente

Beware The Milky Pirate!
I'd a mate message me saying he's having a bit of difficulty with his M8.

He's unlocked the bootloader via htcdev, but as far as I'm aware, hasn't gone the full hog and S-OFF'd.

He flashed CWM, installed CM12, but couldn't get root access. He flashed TWRP, then wiped and reflashed CM12. Root apps still didn't work.

My suggestion was to check root access was switched on via Settings -> Developer Options. He switched it on, rebooted, still no dice.

He'd apparently installed SuperSu via ADB so aware that CM has its own SU app, I told him to uninstall SuperSU. It wouldn't uninstall (as I presume it was installed as a system app) so he decided to factory reset. Now he's stuck in a bootloop where it tries to boot in to TWRP, but fails and reboots itself again.

He's apparently tried every button combination to get it to boot to the bootloader, but nothing is working. Any suggestions?

I know on previous HTC's without a removable battery, I could hold the power button down for X seconds and it would simulate a battery pull, is there anything similar on the M8?

Holding Power + vol up should force a reset. If he then quickly holds vol down (let go vol up) once screen goes black (I know, but should be able to tell its fairly obvious), it will boot to bootloader. He should then lose CWM and flash TWRP - recommended recovery for m8, and CaptainThrowbacks in sticky at top is very well recommended.

(edit : quick tidy up so it is a bit clearer)

Sorry, just focussed on seeing CWM, ignore the whole flashing TWRP bit (oops). He could try

fastboot erase cache

Once in bootloader if TWRP won't boot, after flashing over CWM .
