Root recovery problems

hi guys! so my phone broke and my mum gave me her old ace running 2.2.1 FROYO to use for the remainder of my contract! its locked to virgin and im on 3. so i rooted my device and then installed cwm however i installed a version of cwm designed only for the s5830D so when i try and access recovery it hangs on the samsung screen.

i understand that i can use odin to install cwm 5 but i need to be on 2.3Gb? and to install 2.3GB i would need access to recovery to factory reset the device?

im so confused right now and not having a phone is driving me nuts! any help is much appreicated! thanks, liam

I think you will need to get the phone unlocked separately, i don't know much about it though.
You should just flash a 2.3.x GB firmware via Odin, then root it and flash CWM5.
I don't know if you need to be on GB in order to install the recovery, just confirm if that is really a requirement.
