Reducing mobile data usage

Just got a HTC Sensation and I've got 500mb of data/month. I've heard the phone eats data so I'm wondering what the best settings to use are to help with this.

Currently I use wifi whenever I can and only turn mobile data on when I'm out and about. Can I set facebook and my email to check manually? What about weather, news and other apps?

Are there any settings I've likely got on which I don't really need?

Thanks in advance!

not too sure about settings sorry, but monitoring the network usage per application may help.

i just downloaded an app called 'traffic monitor' by a company called RadioOpt which allows you to monitor both the wifi and cellular network usage of each app using data.

sorry i couldn't help with your more specific question but i hope this helps.

I use a different phone, but i've noticed that while im in wifi range (at home) the phone doesnt use mobile data connection to send and recieve data. Its purely your home connection doing it. I've never personally used over the 500mb limit, so unless you're streaming videos or actually using it up in that kind of way then nothing to worry about really... Navigation doesnt use much and browsing + widgets doesn't seem to either...
