Root Regarding USB Bricks

1st of all, I don't have a USB brick. Hopefully it will stay that way :p
I tried to read up on it, as the original thread with the brick fix alluded to the possibility of it happening randomly when flashing a new rom. But seeing that the thread is from May 2010, I was curious if the risk of a USB brick is avoidable nowadays, of if it might still happen out of the blue sky. Should one create an image of mtd0... for safety reasons? Didn't really understand the xda instructions, it was too late I guess...:o
Any hints or tips?

Thx in advance!

As far as I know flashing radios increases chances (if it's the wrong radio)
Or power failure/ USB failure during flash are the only thing that might brick it.

I'm not expert though so I'm sure someone who knows more will be more helpful :)

You can do your best to avoid it simply by being careful but sometimes it may happen. Its not actually a brick though as it is recoverable.

The only real bricks nowadays are radio bricks. If that happens, you're stuffed.

So the question is: How to avoid one? I didn't quite get the xda answers there; is it due to flashing nandroids between different cwms?
Also, would it be useful to prepare a "spare" mtd0.img on the sd card? As I didn't have a usb brick as of now, if it should happen, is the phone itself still useable apart from usb connectivity? Sorry mate, questions over questions, I just want to make sure I can cope with it once I encounter it!

Its the usb connectivity but often android cant mount the sd card.

Wont hurt to have a copy of the img on sd and pc.

I am not sure on the cause. But yeah sticking to the same version of CWM is always best. I find 2.5.0.7 the best stable version.

I havent had this problem in my year of flashing so I havent read the threads in details.

Being careful extends to not breaking usb connection if flashing from a pc, not dropping power when flashing (or dropping the phone) and anything you can md5 checksum to ensure its not corrupt, do so.

Yea I should probably check the cid and create my img. Didn't seem to complicated, even though the steps later on were not that clear.
Btw as I'm on the Alpharev version of cwm, flashing the 2.5.0.7 one can be done with the flashing tool you posted on the other thread right? Or would fastboot commands be safer? Do you still have that copy of the CMW in your dropbox, the last link you posted didn't work.
Thx in advance!

Hey all, my first post! woo! My desire is rooted, N1 flashed, S-off'ed. And I was using a miui rom.

So basically I need to restore the phone to vodafone stock settings so I can send my phone in for repair due to the speaker not working, the signal not working, and now my usb.. Ive tried installing different roms to no avail- same issues,. Also tried my sim in another desire; everything works!

So Ive downloaded the latest Vodafone RUU to my computer but my USB isnt working on my phone so plugging it in when prompted leads to an 'error 170' message which ive read about. Thing is, even when I dont use the RUU program and just try to connect my phone and transfer pictures or anything, my phone doesnt open disk. It just charges. I cant access anything through the USB.

Ive tried option number 2 from the following link:

[GUIDE] How to Unroot an HTC Desire - xda-developers

So there is a way of Un- rooting my phone via the SD card, only problem is I do everything as it says, then when turning phone on, it checks the file and then says 'incorrect cid'

and nothing happens.

please advise! been struggling with this for days!!

many thanks,

david.

That's because you're sd card is not a goldcard.

Yes it can be done from sd using pb99img file. Would have to look on shipped Roms for one or make one yourself from a Voda RUU

Thanks for the above reply, I didnt realise I had a reply on here as lost track of my posts on various websites.

Ive now got a slightly different issue, on another phone as gave up on the last one when trying to create a goldcard, using the hex editor etc, was all a bit beyond me to be honest. If i could send one of you my phones to fix i would pay you!

Please check out my latest problem and provide an answer if possible.

Thanks!
