Release Date

Does not sound like the phone is being released the 12th.Sounds like you can just go to your retailer and view info about it on their laptop.

There have been several reports of the Android 2.2 update for the Droid X being pushed back to September in order to address some issues in working with Exchange and Adobe Flash 10.1 for Froyo apparently now has an August 18th release date. Given the similarities between the Droid 2 and the Droid X and the e-mail noted above including highlighting the Flash capability, might these other dates affect the Droid 2 release? Because of these issues, might we see an 8/12 'soft' release and the 8/23 date for actual sales in stores?

Remember they can patch whatever issues they're having with smaller over-the-air updates. A phone update doesn't have to be an update to the version of Android. Just about every phone has some issues that are discovered and patched shortly after launch. Unless they were huge bugs, I don't think it would make them push back the launch date.

Hooray, another Droid enters the Android community Aug 12th.
Froyo is going to be a big push/ selling point whether anyone wants to believe it or not...
Look at all the different leaked VZ documents talking up Froyo on the Droid 2.
"Its gunna be the first phone to launch with Froyo"
This is the first thing the reps here at both Corporate Stores talk about when I bring up the Droid 2.

went to Costco today and decided to stop by the indirect store booth. Asked what day the D2 was going to drop and the rep said its suppose to this week. Not sure how credible he was, but that was the first time i've heard any VZW associate give me that date. Most would always tell me end of August

I have all ways believed it to be true.I have also stated and been attacked for it many times that they are holding back Froyo for the Droid X because of the Droid 2.Some people are still falling for Verizon's BS story, but do they really believe they would release a phone with a operating system full of bugs. They are putting their reputation on the line by marketing this as the first phone coming loaded with Froyo, yet we still have people saying that it is still to buggy to even use on the Droid X.I thought Apple fan boys were bad but it seems like the Verizon boys have them beat.

The comment about Froyo for the Droid X not being ready until September came in a response from Motorola in their Droid X Developer forum. The comment was in threads related to Exchange sync and notifications issues and the one in the notifications thread said "Some Droid X users are experiencing an issue using Exchange 2003 email. Though the email is arriving on the Droid X, no notifications are appearing. A fix for this will be included in the upgrade to Android 2.2 scheduled for deployment by early September."

I am not an expert in the topic so I don't know how whether addressing the Exchange issues are integral to implementing Froyo, however I have yet to see anything addressing the apparent month or so gap, assuming Froyo had to be ready for the Droid 2 some time before phones actually start shipping, that apparently is going to occur between the Droid 2 being released with Froyo and releasing a Froyo update for the Droid X. Maybe the "by early September" could be a conservative date and the Droid X Froyo update could drop at any time before then, perhaps they're even assessing some fixes with the Droid 2 before releasing the Droid X Froyo update, but that is all pure conjecture with no support.

Releasing a phone with known problems makes no sense but without some other explanation for the delay it does make it seem like either the Droid 2 may have some known bugs when released, which might be addressed in an update around the same time the Droid X gets Froyo, or that the Froyo update for the Droid X is being deliberately delayed. I'm open to other explanations.

My personal issue with this is that we are going to be ordering a Droid 2 and a Droid X at the same time. I was hoping that with all the similarities between the phones that both phones would be able to initially run the same version of Android. Instead we are apparently going to have two very similar phones ordered at the same time that will start with rather significantly different versions of the OS. I'm trying to understand why.
