Reminder function on the calender

I have a SONY EXPERIA E DUAL SIM. I know how to set a calender event with a reminder. The problem is when the phone is in sleep mode the reminder does not go off until I unlock the phone again. This makes the "reminder" useless. How do I set the phone that allows the reminder to go off even in sleep mode?
