For an individual I have set a notification. How do I change that to no notification so its silent. Is the only way to mute

You can always just choose silent from your notifications for the individual

Ok but I cant find that option. I hold the contact I want to change then the 3 dots top right pick customize then Notifications then I would pick Notification sound then a browser comes up to pick a ringtone there is no option for silent that I can see
It depends what app you use for picking the sound. On my phone the Google Sounds app has "none" as one of the options under "my sounds", while if I use Chomp SMS as the sound picker for Textra (odd, but it's an option) then "silent" is the first option.

Download a silent notification and use that
But I don't think Textra has a sound picker of its own - it will use whatever you have set as default (or whatever the system has set if you only have one app capable of handling this intent).
