Removing ads in apps

Hi everyone.

I have an un-rooted Samsung S3 running 4.1.2, and so I cannot use Adaway to block ads in ad-supported apps. On the other hand, I thought AdBlockPlus was just for blocking ads inside a browser (such as Firefox), but I've seen reports of it also blocking ads inside apps, so I downloaded and configured it (including manual proxy). However it does nothing to remove the ads in ad-supported apps, even after trying each of the available lists.

My old S2 was rooted and with Adaway installed, and no apps could load ads (including Youtube), however I remember it took me ages to root the phone, and I'd rather not have to do the same for my new S3.

Not getting any help from the AdblockPlus forum... Can anyone suggest how to get rid of ads (with AdblockPlus or otherwise) without rooting the phone? Thanks in advance for any help!

As far as i know mate, youll really have to be rooted. These apps need to be able to write to the /system partition which is imposible without root :(
Even on my rooted s3 running 4.3, those apps dont work for me and i cant work out why lol. The s3 is very easy to root but i wouldnt do it just to block ads

I thought that using a proxy (as ABP does) is a way around having to write to the /system folder - or no? Although clearly, whatever it's doing, it's not working :)

So Adaway on a rooted S3 does *not* stop ads? That's quite strange: my late S2 was also running 4.1.2, and I had long forgotten what it's like to have a YT clip delayed by ads. Since the software (4.1.2+Adaway) is the same, why would the S2 stop ads but not the S3?

Tbh i dont know how ABP works mate. You could be right there. Other people with a rooted s3 swear by AdAway.. i think the problem is unique to me lol :)
