Removing Facebook-Twitter

Pep

Android Enthusiast
Hi all
I'm new to Android having just gotten a HTC Desire HD.
Is there anyway to remove the Facebook-Twitter-Peep apps, as i'm never gonna use them.

Thanks
Pep

Yes you can uninstall Facebook, twitter app from your HTC Desire HD doing so, you do not have to root your phone
follow few steps go to the main menu, goto settings under that goto applications
and under applications click manage applications
You will now see the list of all the apps installed on your android device
you can click on any app
and then select the option to uninstall it

This does not work for the pre-installed bloatware, such as "Peep"

You can "freeze" them with Titanium Backup. This will make them unavailable to the system and remove them from the app drawer. If something goes sideways because they've been frozen you can "defrost" them to bring them back.

They will still take up storage space however if that's a concern.

You would still have to root the phone.

OP:
Since you are new to android, I wouldn't suggest rooting the phone right away. If seeing apps you don't want bothers you use go launcher our launcher pro to hide them.

Given all the fuss regarding application permissions surrounding android apps at the moment, and the fact that the Facebook app is allowed access to my personal information as well as full access to the SMS, MMS and phone book facilities, not to mention services that cost money, I find it amazing that the latest update to android and HTC sense still does not allow you to remove the Facebook application from the phone. It is always running unless I force stop it, so is using memory. I have no desire to use it, and wish it to be removed, without the hassle of rooting a phone (which I assume will render my insurance invalid).

Not everyone is into all this social networking lark and to force it on phone users is wrong. The app can be downloaded from the market so I don't see why it has to be rooted within the phone.

Yes, your warranty will be invalid.

That's Google for ya!

Amen.

No difference whether Facebook app is removed or not IMO. Even if they "eat" memory. This is Android we're talking about, not Symbian, where you need active memory management. If the system needs the memory, Android will close down the unused apps using memory, in this case Facebook, and use the space for active processes. The only time Facebook is there is on bootup since its part of it. Just hide it, and you can forget about it. You dont even need task killers/managers, or to even look at your memory usage.

This doesn't remove the fact that this app loads on boot up, and has access to my personal information, contacts, messaging services etc. The point I was trying to make is that you should be allowed to remove the app if you don't want it. The only apps you shouldn't be able to delete are the ones that are essential for the phone to work properly (messaging services, mobile network services, wifi services etc)

I beg to differ: FB, Twitter, etc. are stored in internal memory. Not on the SD card. Thus they occupy space in internal memory which is consequently not available for storing, or running!, other apps. I.o.w. wasted internal memory space.

One thing, AFAIK the facebook/twitter app cannot access your contacts, messaging services etc if you have not activated it. It will only start syncing your contacts once you are logged in. The cache'd FB on memory is the photo upload service. Even once you activate it, it still asks you to let it access your phonebook before proceeding.

How much space to they even use? Negligible IMO, unless you use a rather low end phone. I have all my 170apps on phone storage, not SD card, but then again I have almost 2gb worth of phone storage. Depends on your phone I guess, but from what I remember, newer HTC phones have decent phone storage.

It adds up!
And then there are the corrupt apps like for instance 'Lapse it', which did download to my phone, but never installed. So it IS occupying space. Wasting it. Invisible to all file explorers I tried. I've had that happen a handful of times. All those apps are still sitting there, uninstallable and unremovable, wasting internal memory space.

I have 216MB of internal memory, which fills up easily, I can tell you. Especially if a large part of it is already uselessly occupied by stock and corrupt apps.
