Root Removing factory installed applications

Do I need to root my tablet before removing factory installed applications? Can you explaining what does this do and are there any advantages vs dis advantages? Thank you all for your advice and time, it is greatly appreciate.

In order to remove pre-installed bloatware rubbish, you would need to be rooted. It is relatively straight forward, but I advise looking over it a couple of times before going for it.

Before we start... What is your software version?

3.2.1
I just grazed through the article all things rooted and became a bit intimidated. If this was my PC I would do just about anything as I am comfortable with windows.

I was on 3.2 and used one of the methods to root that I put a link in Frisco's sticky (http://androidforums.com/iconia-tab...3-acer-iconia-a500-all-things-root-guide.html).

The link to what I used is - root guide 3.2 & 3.2.1 (inc. YouTube video)

I watched the video a couple of times and downloaded the files and followed the vid, step-by-step and rooted in about 20 mins.

Once rooted, I installed Taboonay's ICS ROM (that is also linked in Frisco's sticky), but I am thinking of changing (just for the hell of it) soon (once I get an SD card).

If you need me to talk you through anything, just reply in here and I'll try help.

I am moving this thread to the All Things Root section, as it is clear that this is all root related.

Hit me up if you need any help - I'll keep my eye on this thread! :D

What are the differences on the ROM's? After a tablet has been rooted can it ever be restored to factory shipped defaults? Sorry for all of the questions and I apologize for posting in the wrong forum earlier

Don't apologize... you did nothing wrong... I just moved it, as yours is a root question :)

It is possible to go back to stock if you want, however custom ROM's can be better.

The choice really is yours... if you root now, you can have a custom ICS ROM on your A500 straight away, but if you prefer to wait for an official version, then you shouldn't (by all accounts) have too long to wait before you get it pushed out by Acer.

As for being able to root once you have an official Acer version of ICS on there... you may not be able to straight away, but I'm sure it wouldn't take too long before someone has cracked it and rooting is possible.

It is worth thinking though about the fact that, once Acer have released their official version of ICS, it would not be long before the ROM devs release versions of their own based on all the official drivers, etc. :)
