It's possible that a cable doesn't have active cables on the data pins. USB spec has Pin 1 as +5V, 2&3 as data, and 4 as ground or cable spec. So, if a cable simply doesn't have a wire hitting pins 2&3, it could provide power only without any data. I had a cable a while ago that only provided power wiring and no actual wires to the data pins since its sole design was to provide juice, not data.
In any case, I've had good results with the cables from Monoprice. Very inexpensive and available in a variety of lengths.
