Replacement Galaxy Note 7 Catches Fire on plane

AC has the sensationalist headline "The Galaxy Note brand is now damaged beyond repair" :p

Good grief! Apple has had their share of failures, but I don't recall BGR or any of the other iFan mags calling for Apple to shut down the iPhone brand!

I have decided that if the worst DOES happen and Jeanette (that's what I named my Note 7) lets the smoke out, I will turn her over to the CPSC... NOT Samsung. I'll let the feds verify that it's a replacement before Samsung can take it away and do some kind of damage control. Hopefully that scenario doesn't arise

Child Protective Services of Canada?!?!?!

Boom, and another.

If I'm reading that correctly, this happened before the incident on the plane. :(

Not sure what to make of the supposed message from Samsung either. Anyone else think it could be BS?

I'm inclined to take anything with a pinch of salt until it's proven beyond all doubt. But this one I really don't believe the message from Samsung and I have a hard time buying hospital treatment/smoke inhalation. Part of me wonders how many now will be simply seeking compensation maybe even still have the original handsets but don't want to be questioned as to why they didn't partake in the recall.

Yeah, I'm curious why he didn't give the phone to Samsung for investigation, nor is there a picture of the box to prove it's a replacement, not one of the pre-recall devices.

To be fair, there are other Android devices. Pulling the iPhone would not leave them any alternatives ;)

Besides, Apple's failures have tended to be reception, battery life or nowhere to plug in your headphones - none of those is actually dangerous the way a lithium fire is.

But yeah, we'll have to see what the story with these most recent reports really is. Or what the stories are, as they may not be the same. I can imagine people trying to cover up their errors [1], failures in the exchange process where someone got back another problematic phone, or an failure on Samsung's part to correctly or fully identify the causes [2]. At this point which just don't know.

[1] Like the guy who claimed his new S3 had spontaneously combusted and went to the press - then when Samsung investigate it turns out that the phone had been microwaved...

[2] I've had experience with something like that myself recently. There has been a problem with certain models of Vauxhall Zafira catching fire in the UK, which led to 2 recalls. The first recall notice outright blamed third party repairs for the problem (so didn't recall cars that had only ever been repaired by dealers). The second, coming after "fixed" cars caught fire, said nothing at all about the cause. It was obvious that they'd originally jumped on an explanation that absolved them from the blame, and got it wrong.

What are the odds that the next Samsung device is going to have a removable battery? Or at least a Kevlar lined phone to mitigate any explosions?

I named mine Phoenix.

If a new battery were to be used in the safe models that have exploded, either the problem isn't the battery, or quality control somehow let some of the bad batteries in the mix. Whatever it is, samsung is in deep trouble...

Yup, this just burns my ass (no pun intended as I don't own an N7) when Apphole gets off the hook or doesn't even say boo about having a contingency to issue a recall in light of Samsung having a few failures. Where's the media on this one? Why aren't airlines immediately announcing an iPhone 7 ban also? I know what Apphole does - they're hiding all of their incidents so it doesn't get out in the spotlight.

I love the take in this article that Apple is now copying Samsung when in the past they accused them of doing so in a lawsuit.

Apphole stole the explosion feature thinking this was one of Samsung's innovation.

Let's just keep posting these incidents for all eyes to see.

Are we allowed to use foul language on here? I expect more from fellow N7 users.

Wasn't aware Note 7 uses were held to a higher standard than the rest of the forum, but mild bad language used sparingly is generally acceptable. Foul mouthed tirades where the forum software has to star out multiple words is not.

That being said, if you're unsure, hit the report button and one of us can take a look at it. :)
