Replacing a broken iPhone

My friend finally destroyed her iPhone and I want to get a Verizon replacement for her (if she didn't have a contract with them I'd get her an Optimus V, oh well). I have nothing against iPhones but I sure as hell ain't paying full price for one. :D

What are some nice, affordable, middle of the line Verizon smart phones? She texts constantly, plays her monster game and words with friends often, does most of her email on it, and talks a few times a day. I'm happy enough with my OV that I'm considering the LG Vortex; I actually found a clean rooted one for 60. Vortex reviews say they have Bing Maps stock. Nuts to that; at least rooted means she can use Google Maps instead. She's not the most techy person though, so a stock phone might be better. Anyways...

Any thoughts on the Vortex or something else? Thanks!

I don't know anything at all about that. :D Whatever I get I'd like to check out in a store first. She really doesn't need a cutting edge phone- stability and reasonable battery life (and probably room to store her silly games!) is the big part here.

FWIW, she had a Motorola Droid (model?? it has a sliding keyboard) before the iPhone and she does just fine on my tablet so there shouldn't be any issues with going to a different OS.

The Rezound if I remember correctly is also known as the Sensation XE? That's like HTC's flagship right now.

I _believe_ that's correct - dual core S3 at 1.5 GHz, 720p 4.3" display, Beats audio, and a lot of internal memory (Verizon always specs above and beyond normal) - I forget if it's 16 or 32 GB internal (I think 16) + up to 32 GB on the SD card - 4G, and great reports on battery life and radio performance.
