Replacing my macbook with a galaxy tab...

As the title says, I'm considering replacing my macbook completely for a tab 10.1. I have gotten to the point where I really dislike dealing with itunes and mac products in general. And as far as I can see, a tab would actually do almost ALL the things I use my computer for, and might actually do a better more efficient job.

My concerns:
I'm still in school, so I'm writing reports/emails, and the occasional paper. I know there are a couple of really good document apps out there, and that the tab comes with a stock app for the same purpose. What do yall think about the practicality of dealing with a normal school load of document creation/editing/viewing all from a tablet? I would probably go ahead and invest in a keyboard.

I'm really not sure how I'm going to manage my music on my old ipod nano. I'm seriously considering just ditching the nano altogether, and starting to keep my music on a 16G miniSD card on my phone. Whenever I switch phones, I can move the card over. The music managing thing will be a little complicated, but I think I can deal. In the long run this won't be an issue because I've got an HDD and I'm going to be moving away from the apple products altogether after a while.

My biggest thing is that I'm most often simply using my computer to browse, email, or do a little bit of document work. That's it. The programs I use on my mac consist of the chrome browser, word, powerpoint, itunes and iphoto. And honestly, 90% of the time I'm just browsing, streaming media, or both. I really like the idea of moving to a tablet and being able to do most of those things with a lighter, more portable interface.

What do yall think of making this switch? Is it too early and premature with the software/apps we have available, or do you think the Galaxy will be able to support my needs adequately?

TABS ARE NOT PC AND LAPTOP REPLACEMENTS They are toys, fun and functional toys...... but still toys.

If you need to do any serious work on anything that matters. Buy laptop or a PC.

My opinion

I think as long as you have the keyboard it shouldn't be that bad. It will probably be a lot of getting used to if you are going to make powerpoint presentations on it and such like attaching pictures and features. When you buy a printer you will probably need one to hook up through wifi to print out documents...like the person above said it's not a computer so the experience is completely different. Internet browsing is just as good on my tablet as my computer I feel. However, keep in mind that the tab only has 1GB of Ram so you just have to remember to go into task manager and clear out apps otherwise a bit of lag will occur. The tablet is also super light weight which is great.

These are 2 videos that I found that I seem are semi ok. I have no idea about how PC tablets are but what about trying one of those? Best of both worlds if the PC Tablet works the same....might wanna do some research in that.

I'd definitely buy a pc. Don't get me wrong I love my tab and I do use it for school sometimes, but only when I don't have to take my laptop to do intense work. Browsing is NOT the same I find, especially stock browser. You will notice if you have many tabs open they all are not loading at the same time, only the one your working with until you switch to the other tab (and I use alot of tabs while working). Also, the precision and speed is just not the same when trying to use documents. I've wanted to use my tab for school, but I find it's just more time consuming and it's not as efficient. You need to think too, pc's are much more powerful than a tablet. They also have many ports for usb and if your doing heavy work you may need your pc plugged in. If your tablet dies sure you can plug it in, may work it a bit hard but you would need a dock to keep it up that charges it as the galaxy tab 10.1 charger is on the bottom. Ok now with that said, I do love my galaxy tab 10.1. It truly is an amazing tab I find. I've had no problems with it and love using it. As I stated though, I use it for email, lighter browsing, and occasional pdf/powerpoint note readings; but any heavy projects, papers, or research I need to do is done on my pc. I'd recommend hp laptops, they are my preference and have treated me well. Hope this helps, I should probably get back to my lab paper now :)

At this point in history, I would still buy a PC for that type of work. Tablets can be more than toys, but I think for real productivity, you will struggle.

I'm a linux server admin, and due to the size of our team, I'm on call pretty much 24/7. For me, the galaxy tab + the samsung keyboard case has allowed me to stop carrying a full laptop around with me everywhere I go.

In an emergency, I can access my exchange email (complete with SMIME encryption), jump on the VPN to SSH into any of my servers, and access the web management portal for our hosting vendor.

Luckily those emergencies don't happen very often, but if they do, I'm not stuck.

I also find the tablet very useful to take into meetings for typing up notes. I have yet to try to do a presentation off of a tablet, but I'm sure that day will come to.

Yep...what you guys have said is sort of what I was expecting a little bit. I'm not going to try to replace my computer with a tablet just yet...I'll just wait until I can afford the luxury of having the tablet for light duties in addition to the computer.

I'm sure we'll get there one day, but from what you are saying, the tablets available right now just aren't up to the tasks of serious day to day work.
