Replacing phone on 2 year contract

I searched the forums but couldn't find a close enough answer, so excuse my post if this has been asked.
A few days ago, I very stupidly took my Thunderbolt to the lake with me and dropped it in. Needless to say, it doesn't work anymore. I have another year until my contract is up but I want to replace it with the Rezound. My question is, if I buy a Rezound from somewhere with no contract and try to activate it through Verizon with the same number as my Thunderbolt, will they charge me for trying to replace it with a different phone? They both are 4g phones and I think the data plan would stay the same. I'm just a little confused as to how replacing a phone before the contract ends works.

Aokusman is correct, you can change between 4G phones on your plan without restriction (only thing is if they take different SIM card sizes, you will need to get a new one.). No costs to you though.

I had no clue if replacing my phone would be considered terminating contract since I wouldn't have a thunderbolt anymore. Thanks for the fast help!
