Replacment HTC Hero Sync Problems

I had to return my HTC hero due to a sound fault, I was struggling to hear people when I was using the phone. Before returning the phone I decided to sync the phone with HTC Sync on my computer.

When I received the new phone I hooked it up to my computer but unfortunately HTC Sync won't recognise this new replacement phone, this is incredibly frustrating as I really need to get my contacts on to it. I am a little reluctant to reinstall HTC Sync as I am worried I might lose my contacts.

Does anyone have a solution to this or know exactly where my contacts are stored, as surely if needed I could back up the contacts folder and then reinstall HTC sync and Copy and Paste that contacts folder into the new directory.

I think a few people have had problems - mine worked eventually after rebooting both phone and computer. Give it a couple of mins after connecting it.

I had troubles sync'ing the Hero too but in the end I manged both with Vista and XP machines.
What OS are you using?
I may have a few good tips.
