Help reset to factory settings, lost contacts

My galaxy S somehow reset to factory settings and I lost all my contacts. The man in the phone shop said I should be able to get them back from googlemail but I don't know how. All my contacts were saved on the phone and I've never used the googlemail. Any ideas?
