Reset used MyTouch 3G?

John Jason

Android Enthusiast
Today I bought a used T-Mobile MyTouch 3G. It has Android 2.2.1. I don't know if it has been rooted, but if it has not I'd just as soon leave it that way for now until I learn more what I am doing.

The seller didn't delete anything before handing it over. I uninstalled all the apps that I didn't want and removed his contacts, but when I try to go to the Market it shows his username and prompts me for his password. There are probably other things on it that I should remove.

Google tells me I need to do a wipe, then on another page a reset, and I am too new to Android to know the difference, or if there is something else I should be doing. I am worried about messing up the SIM card. And I don't know what to expect after wiping / resetting.

Can someone help a confused newbie?

I finally found the answer in another thread:

However, the keystroke method does not work. That is, the instructions don't say how to "select" the option and it was not obvious. Also, the menu method states the menu location incorrectly.

Unfortunately, those instructions are incomplete and do not work.

First, the "keystroke method" instructions are either completely wrong or incomplete. I could get to the warning screen, and I could select Factory Reset, but the instructions failed to say how to actually launch Factory Reset. I tried clicking and double clicking on the trackball, I tried all the other buttons, including holding them down a long time, but nothing would get Factory Reset to launch. I assume the person who wrote those instructions just didn't think to add the last part.

The "menu method" references a menu item that does not exist. Perhaps it existed in a previous version of Android when the instructions were written. However, I did finally get my MyTouch 3G reset by looking all over. It turns out the menu item is under "Privacy" on my Android 2.2.1 MyTouch 3G.

I spent over an hour googling and trying different things before I stumbled on the correct method. Someone needs to fix / update the instructions and make them a sticky somewhere.
