restore after crash Android 4.2

Today my device (again) crashed on being switched on, and said it had to go back to factory reset, it also said that afterwards it would give me the option to restore from the back up.
It did not do so. There was nothing of the sort. The device was back to manufacturer condition with nothing of mine at all: Not even the stuff that had been installed to external card.
Backup and restore claims that that it will restore automatically. But there isn't anyway to tell it to do it if it doesn't do so automatically. So is there a way to force the restore?

Quote from Google's Android web pages.

"After resetting your phone, you'll need to re-enter the same information requested when you first set up your phone. If you've been backing up your data to a Google account, an option during the setup process allows you to restore it."

But this just didn't happen.
And previously I had a crash on boot and it was the same then.

Were you backing apps/data up with Google? On my phone (Gingerbread, AOSP) this is the "Back up my data" option in the Privacy menu - may be different on yours. If that isn't set, then there will be no restore apart from any Contacts and Calendar data you may have synced with Google (as those are separate from this option).

Moving apps to SD only moves part of the app, and a factory reset will indeed clear that part.

Edit: I've seen your other thread now, so see that you did have this option ticked. Bit funny, since I think it did work the one time I accidentally used it (I generally prefer not to).

Thanks. A couple of days later a list of the apps I'd previously had installed suddenly appeared. In the My Apps list. They weren't functioning, but a click on each and it reinstalled itself. Strange.
