Root Restore brought me too far back in time!

Oh geez, I did the 2.3 OTA ROM update via ROM Manager several weeks ago. I tried a new ROM today, just for grins (CM7xxx). Then, for the first time ever, I attempted the Restore function...I *thought* I had selected the September 21 (today) backup date. That brought me to the embedded system menu or whatever, where I went thru the menu to select Restore.

NOW, I have an old, old wallpaper and am back to Froyo I think.

What likely happened?

Meaning, I am back to 2.2 and a homescreen(s) from many moons ago. I jsut confirmed, the restore date I selected was 9/21/11. What happend?
 
Anyone know the answer? Why using the Restore function and selecting the date from a few days ago wound up restoring to a set up that I had over a year ago?
