Help Restoring/backup with HTC Sync / Dropbox

Hi guys,

Im relatively new to the HTC One after being an iPhone user for many years. Im really enjoying the phone and Im glad I switched. Just a couple of questions in regards to backing up contacts, mail, texts etc. There seems to be so many ways of doing this? and as I understand it the HTC back up which uses dropbox only backs up the way you had the phone set up and not contacts, texts etc.

So my question is what is the best and easiest way of backing up everything ( like iCloud ) I guess.

Hi,

First post here so hopefully I get this right. I have a HTC one which I have owned for about 10 months now, best phone I have ever had bar a couple of problems. In particular a microphone malfunction which was repaired FoC by HTC last week, nice!

Now I am setting the phone back up, I am trying to restore the settings from the htc account using Dropbox. I know I backed it up right, I checked before I did the factory reset when it was sent away, and the backup files definitely exist as when I log on to Dropbox it has a file named HTC Backup with files in it all dated over the last few weeks.

When I do the initial switch on after the phone was returned, I put all my details in and the searched HTC restore but didn't find a backup file. I can't work out why this is? After some research most places say after you put your HTC account details in it will ask for your Dropbox login, but for some reason it isn't doing this.

I have tried coming out of this setup screen, and doing it manually by putting in login details to Dropbox first and then doing the HTC login and making sure it uses the correct storage space, but it still not showing it up. It's like they aren't talking to each other properly.

I am a bit concerned I am going to lose all my settings. This backup file hasn't been touched so I know its not that. Is there a certain place the file should be in Dropbox, currently it is under "apps" and then a folder called "HTC backup"?

Any help would be great as this is getting a bit stressful

Were you rooted?

HTC has ended their relationship /integration with Dropbox.

I highly recommend you let Google backup your data moving forward.

Do not use HTC backup.

You apps are saved. There are backup options in the store that will allow you to backup. If you want to root you have even more options.

I suggest you manually set up your phone, this time using Google and perhaps a local app to save your home screens, etc.

It's very difficult to diagnose such issues over the Internet.
 
I have found that HTC backup has not done a great job of restoring everything, so when I get mine back, I'm going to switch to Google for backup too.
 
Well it's easy to say use google now I have factory reset the phone, but surely HTC know this and would then change the use of their backup program?

I used this only 4 months ago when I had to reset the phone, and although it didn't work first time after going back and then searching for the HTC backup file a few times it found it on Dropbox and the restore was perfect. Same programs, right places, all my settings etc and was very impressed....so has it changed since then?

Luckily I use google for all my contacts, and all my programs backup individually so it's just the hassle of reinstalling apps from google play and setting out the phone again. But what's the point of having HTC backup if it doesn't work?

Speaking to htc support yesterday they advised they could do something over the internet where one of their engineers takes control of the phone and should be able to do It over the internet, have you ever heard of anything like this?
 
htc's backup program is clunky and an unreliable way to backup. I cant comment on if they can have remote access to your device but I would not let them do it if they could.

htc sync program probably works for some but it cant be guaranteed to work with everyone. perhaps htc knows about it through trouble tickets from users, and this may me why they have stopped using dropbox going forward (on the one max for example, google drive is featured).

just use googles backup and perhaps a 3rd party app in the store.

Thanks for your help about the backup issue. The phone has come back to me today for the second time, thank god the problem is now fixed, so for backup what is best to use?

HTC account but then use google drive and sign in with my google details (switching away from Dropbox) or should I just use my google account and then like you say have a 3rd party app to save home screen etc.

Had to manually setup the phone up which is annoying, but made me realise again how good this phone is!

Did someone ever try the backup and restore on the HTC One?
If yes then:
What is not really backedup? app date...? App shortcuts...?


Factory reset: will it keep my photos/videos?
 
First, thanks for answering my camera post yesterday.

Moving on, I synced my phone with the HTC Sync Manager prior to performing the factory reset. Now after the reset, I am receiving new text messages where the contacts are not known, but before the reset I had entered in their names.

IE Christian gave me his number, I sent him a text so he had mine.
Then I change and "add to people" with his name.
Now all the texts I get have his name on it

Sync with HTC Manager
---RESET---

Now all I see is his phone number.


This is frustrating, as I have added a good number of friends like this, and now cannot locate their names in my "people's" list

I restored from backup, and a majority of friends from when I had my IPHONE are in the list.

However the ones I've added into my contacts from the last 5 months are now gone.

Normally don't care, but was going to ask a girl out and now I don't have her number....

Anyway to recover this? or what is the proper way to add someone so that they won't get UN-Synced next time I have to reset?
 
htc sync uses dropbox so those discussions are moved here.

others have had issues using htc backup as well. its hit or miss with some things as mentioned in this thread.

best to stick to google's tried and true setup.
 
Had to do a factory reset on my htc one. Had backed up onto my computer a few days before. While in the store, backed up texts, call logs and contacts to cloud. waiting waiting waiting, left store while phone was restoring off the cloud. Get home. No texts, no call logs. pictures and music though, which was odd. Connected to computer for HTC SYnc Manager restore, phone auto backed up, which meant no texts, no call logs... Seemingly REPLACED the old back up even though it clearly gives the option of choosing a back up file ( which only has one file now ) SO MANY problems trying to sign into cloud, cant get back to the store, any idea if it's possible to find the original back up file in sync? checked cache log, seems like only the new one is in there....
 
My cat accidentally ripped the charging cable from my phone and i wasnt able to copy the data over to my computer or another device. Its now completely dead. I have the HTC One M7. I know its a sealed phone so Im just wondering what my options are.

Ive tried looking for this over multiple sites and many hours on google. Just hoping someone here has an idea.
 
if the physical port is not damaged, you should be able to plug the device up to charge it.

you can try the "volume up button + power button" trick. hold these down until the phone reboots.

if the phone can not turn on, there is nothing you can do with a stock phone to regain any data. you must find a way to get it turned on.

if you have subscribed to the cloud backup options out there, you can access your data from them.
 
My HTC One is going back to have the low light camera problem fixed that makes everything pink

What do I need to back up before it's sent?

I think all my apps are kept on my google account, is this correct?
 
google keeps a record of your apps installed from the google store.

if you are not using one of the backup apps mentioned in this thread, you should consider one prior to sending the device in.
