Restoring SMS.bak Backup? Which app?

Donna80

Lurker
I had to reset my HTC Android yesterday as it went into a booting loop that nothing would solve, but to my surprise the reset removed all my SMS text messages.

I know that at 8pm every day I had an app backup my SMS, and I have a folder on my phone's SD card of /sdcard/smsbackup that contains a two day old 1.41 MB file called sms.bak with recent texts in, in a non-csv, SQL Lite format.

I am not sure if this file contains all my thousands of messages, but I would like to restore it to find out. Does anyone know how I might do this please as I cannot find a suitable app on my phone with have a restore option that works with that file, or that doesn't just backup only.

I've got:
MyBackup Pro (Renware, LLC)
Message Sync (Philipp Schlegel)
SMS Backup [gmail based] (Christoph Studer)
Backup to Gmail [gmail based] (cpedia Mobile)

Note: None of the Gmail backups ever worked more than once, once that had created their folders they were never able to write to them again, so those apps can't be the ones. However, some of my apps were uninstalled when I restored so there is a chance whichever app it was may have been removed.. which would explain why I can't find it.

If anyone can help me restore my SMS from this file I would much appreciate it.

I'm looking to find out which app writes sms.bak to /sdcard/smsbackup and how I can restore it, if anyone knows?

Hi vinedaz, and welcome to AF :)

The answer is "the app that created it", i.e. "sms.bak" isn't some standard file format, but it's what a particular app has called its backup.

So there are two things that will help answer this:

1) what SMS backup apps do/did you have installed, i.e. what apps might possibly have made it?

2) where on your SD card is it? The folder name may give a clue as to the app that created it.

From other posts in this thread I'd guess an app called "SMS Backup" might be a good place to start, since they were seeing this file in a folder called "smsbackup". However, there are a number of apps with the same name, so checking what apps you've (ever!) installed will help identify the correct one.
