Restricted Wi-Fi

Hi there! So I'm on a restricted WiFi network and most android apps and sites are blocked/denied on the connection, regardless of wheather I use VPNs or not.

For apps I can download the app via Google store, no problem but when I load the app it says there is no connection. Websites are unreachable, messanger won't send or receive messages. My VPN app won't even connect to any server.

So my question is, can I set certain apps to use my mobile data plan and not the WiFi so the apps/sites will work.

I tried this in - settings /mobile network/data usage/network access, There are options to allow specific apps to be granted access to Mobile Network or WiFi. I deselect WiFi, and still no connection.
I could use my mobile Internet all the time, but my monthly data usage is limited.

What VPNs have you actually tried? I'm in China, which can have very restricted internet(Great FireWall), and have found that free VPNs usually won't work now. I've been using Astrill VPN(paid) for a year, and that seems to be good. https://www.astrill.com/

As for selecting particular apps to use mobile data instead of WiFi, AFAIK that can't be done, well not without somehow modifying and hacking Android?

I think I solved it. I tried onion over vpn, that didn't work. I tried a variety of obfuscated servers, still no luck. In the end I used a double vpn which seems to do the trick. Latency is a little bit of an issue but I can live with that.

Just for the sake of info and/or arguement...

Without testing my theory on this...

Use two devices.
One device is connected to the Wi-Fi, and using a VPN to do so.

The other device is connected to this device via Wi-Fi hotspot, and using a firewall- such as NoRoot firewall.
Also the mobile data is on.

This solves both issues, as the VPN is needed in order to get access for certain apps, apps can also use the mobile data connection, and the firewall can direct which apps use Wi-Fi and which use mobile data.

Two devices are needed because Android only allows one VPN app to run at a time, and firewalls generally use the VPN api.
