Help Restricting aps updates to WI-FI only

I just got this phone with the $15 data plan which really restricts the amount of data I have. Is there a way to set the phone up to update the apps only when I give permission or when the phone is in a WI-FI area?

Thanks.

I don't think so. At least not all of them. Your best bet is to put a Mobile Data widget on the home screen, and just turn that on when you need data. You can set a lot of apps/accounts to refresh only as needed. But you'll still burn through the 150mb limit in a snap. Unless I'm mistaken, you should still be getting text messages with mobile data turned off.

yes you get txt and phone calls with data 3g off... same way the old cell phones can txt and make calls. EVDO.

If you go to a particular app in the Market, there's a checkbox for automatic updating. Be sure it's not checked. You may have to go to all your apps and look at them. Then when you're in an area with WiFi, turn it on and go to the Market, press Menu>My Apps and all of your apps will be listed, they will also indicate which ones have updates waiting.

I think the OP was referring to apps like Facebook, Weather, News downloading data.

This really helps.

I have set the phone up to use as little data as possible while also being pretty convenient. I have one of my pages set up with shortcuts to the "WiFi on/off", "mobile internet on/off", "WiFi finder", "3G watch", "Sync all", and and "accounts & sync". My 3G does not automatically switch on when out of WiFi range and I use unsecured WiFi whenever possible outside of the house.

I keep auto-sync and back round data on only while using WiFi and don't have to turn it off when I leave the WiFi range because my 3G does not automatically start. If I want 3G, the switch is next to the "accounts & sync" shortcut so it's quick to turn off the back round data and auto-sync first.

Here's what I found that helped me.

Go to the settings menu, and go to Data Manager; click on Data Delivery, then click on Social Applications. Under that, you can choose whether to sync over WiFi only or not.

I actually found this early on when I also had the 150Mb data plan, but wanted to change it once I switched to unlimited... took me forever, but I knew it was in there somewhere.

I would try to root and use DroidWall. Otherwise you are always turning on and off your data which gets annoying. Forget to do it once and then you're 150mb data plan goes real quick.

run Market app, click on additional setting, hit setting. there you can kill all automatic updates or restrict them on Wifi.
you can also set up each individual app to be or not to be automatically updated when you go to My apps
