Root Returning to the Spectrum--Questions

Hello, all!

I've recently purchased a Spectrum on eBAY and will be activating as soon as it arrives later this week (hopefully). I was a Spectrum user and spent a bit of time on the forum here earlier last new year, rooted and installed the Popcorn kernel and a some of the early ROMs that were available.

It's great to see the Spectrum community has grown so much, and that was a deciding factor in returning to it. I've been using the Casio Commando since I left and I only thought the Spectrum had a small dev community, lol. That phone, while rugged (loved taking pics underwater with it) was quite dated and I'm frankly sick of it because it can't deal with current app updates.

Anyway, for anyone who isn't yet sleeping, I'm looking to root and install a custom ROM, but it's absolutely essential that I have full functionality especially with regard to bluetooth.

I'm under the impression that the phone I've ordered already has ICS installed, but is non rooted. I can use the OTA ICS root method, but I was curious as to whether I should avoid the BOOTLOADER PWNAGE tool and installing CWM as I must have bluetooth functionality.

I read that CM10.1 and AOKP42 have functioning bluetooth, is that true for Icy Fusion as well?

My apologies for being so long winded (a personal failing, I'm afraid) and thanks in advance for anyone that's willing to take the time to answer these questions

Once you unlock the bootloader it breaks bluetooth in ICS. But you can then flash CM10.1 or AOKP42 and you'll have Bluetooth back. Icy fusion is currently ICS based so therefore no bluetooth. Actually bluetooth also works in CM10 and AOKP41 which are also jelly bean based. CM10 and AOKP41 are 4.1.2 and CM10.1 and AOKP42 are 4.2.2

Thanks for the quick reply, I'm glad to see you're still kicking around here in the forums. Hopefully I'll get my Spectrum in a few days, I just placed the order today for it and an extended battery. I remember the battery life before was horrendous, so hopefully the extended battery will help with that issue, lol.

I'm mainly just thankful that the dev community finally showed the Spectrum some love and can't wait to see the results on a phone that should've been a winner out of the gate but got severely handicapped with Verizon bloat and quite possibly the worst overlay I've experienced on any Android phone.

Cm10.1 beta 4 is super smooth. If you want the smoothest experience then that's your best bet, but AOKP42 beta5 (i think it's beta 5 now) is not bad either.

All the awesome support we have is mostly thanks to one man named Tom Marshall aka tdm. He's has given us cm9, (also with thanks death2all and playfulgod for that one) aokp40, cm10, aokp41, cm10.1, and aokp42. So yea without tdm we'd still have a pretty limited rom choice.

Now that I know more about roms I've learned that cm and aokp are really all you need because they are by far the most popular roms and there are literally hundreds (maybe 50 or so good ones) of themes for them so you can totally change the look of the rom whenever you want. The themes change everything from the dialer, messaging app, setting UI, status bar icons, notification window, text boxes, check boxes, loading icons, etc. So it's like having the ability to change your whole rom in a matter of about 5 seconds.

So yea, I couldn't imagine using any other rom but cm or aokp because there is just so much you can do with them. It would be cool if we could get paranoid android as well but what we have is great.

You've become one of the go to guys on the forum here, if it wasn't for you and a few others working to pull the devs our way, this phone and development for it would've died like the Commando I've been stuck on for the months since I left. I'll check back in once I get my Spectrum, hopefully I won't have any trouble getting root and installing the new ROM. I feel a lot better knowing that you're around to answer questions and point me in the right direction.

You'll be fine rooting, it's all straight forward and easy really, and if you do have problems, if I don't help there are plenty here that will. This has become quite the little community really, and there are many helpful people here.
