Ridiculous 2.1 Update Issues

Ok, I just bought my eris 2 days ago. Today I was at the verizon store and the guy said that I need the software update but my phone says its up to date. Just as we're talking about it a notification pops up and says "new update available". Because I have gotten so used to clear notifications constantly, I cleared it. So I go to check the system updates again but it still says that im up to date. does anyone know wtf is going on? How can I check to see if im on 1.5 or 2.1?

Settings>About Phone

Look for the Firmware version
if it says 1.5 you have 1.5, if 2.1 then 2.1..

Or just press home twice. 1.5 won't show all 7 screens at once.
