Ring/Notification not going through headphones on S3?

While using headphones on my old Evo, ring and notification sounds would come through the headphones. With the S3, the notification and ring sound still comes out of the phone's speaker rather than the headphones? There must be a way to fix that?? Did I miss something or is this just one of those doofus designer not thinking issues?
 
This is a known OS "feature" added to ICS by Google. Unfortunately I have not heard of a fix for it on the S3. Some have had luck with Bluetooth headphones working correctly.
 
What moron thought of this "feature"?

Q: Why do we wear headphones?
A: So other people don't hear our noise.

Q: Why else do we wear headphones?
A: So we don't hear other noises.

If notification sounds only come out of the speaker:
A: With the volume low, everyone but you will hear it.
B: With the volume high, you and everyone within a 1/2 mile will hear it.

Idiots.
