RING TONE PROBLEM

My phone does not a ring when I receive email messages. It has always done so in the past .
I have checked ring volume. It is on maximum. I have checked the other ring device button on the right hand side of the phone and that is on full. The email just sent from the Android forum, just sent, has not set off the ring tone. How can it be fixed.? Please reply in step by step basic, non techy language. Do not assume I know anything! I do hear the ring tone when if I disable it or reset it to high again. It's just not working when messages come in.

That is your notification volume, not your ringer volume... Which is handled by the media volume. Go to settings, sounds, and look at the media volume
 
So scroll down to notification sound, and see what sound is for that
 
ah ha. Default notification settings is set at 01. It goes up to 11. Should I set it higher? I set it at 11, but it reverted on its own to 01, once I closed my phone.
