Ringtone Text Help

I have ringtones I downloaded assigne to certain people, but it only sounds when they "call." When they text only the default rings. Does anyone know if that can be fixed or am I stuck with default for texts?

Which Android device and OS version do you have?

There are apps in Market which address the ringtone customization needs of users.

Handcent allows you to set a custom text message per contact

That's because ringtones are for calls. Notifications are for apps (messaging being one example). If your stock Messaging app doesn't support individual notification tones for your contacts then try another app. Handcent was suggested above but there are other options as well.
